Man, that Pedestrian is Slow! Do I Really Have to Wait Until They Reach the Other Curb?

How Much is a Ticket for Not Yielding to Pedestrians?

We all know that Alberta law (and everywhere really) requires that you yield to a pedestrian at a crosswalk. The fine on a not yielding to pedestrian ticket is $810 and 4 demerits added to your Alberta driving record. Not only is that fine large but not yielding to pedestrians is a major traffic violation resulting in significant insurance rate increases you'll pay for a three-year period.

The good news though is in Alberta you don't have to wait until they get all the way across to the other curb. Once the pedestrian has cleared your lane you are completely free to go, having completed the yield... BUT, always use your common sense. If the pedestrian is crossing left to right you'll be wanting to wait until they reach the right-hand curb to avoid a ticket for not yielding to pedestrians.

Remember though: if there's a vehicle stopped beside you, you need to have been the first vehicle to stop for the pedestrian before you are permitted to go.
